Pine Wood

I used pine wood, a type of soft wood to make my cam toy. It is used as it is strong and durable and it is easy to work with. I used pine wood to do the top, base and the sides and small parts such as the cams, follower, dowel and the unmovable piece on the piece.
Acrylic
I used acrylic for the movable piece. Acrylic is being used as acrylic is light, hard-wearing, strong despite it is easily scratched or cracked. Acrylic also have a variety of colours so it is commonly use.

Painting
After painting my cam toy, It cannot clank smoothly as I have painted the dowel which is because a layer of paint is added which make the dowel too big for the hole. I use the half round file with the sand paper to file the sides of the dowel thiner so that it can clank smoothly again.

Process
I use the mallet to hammer the cams into the dowel before placing the wood at the side of it. The handle is place beside the wood and the end. I placed the follower's dowel in to the top and place the wood underneath it to support . If the hole is too lose, we will have to apply hot glue in the hole to make it tight-fitted. After that we put glue and hammer 3 nails at each side to make it stable using the hammer.
Mallet

This is the mallet. It is use for hammering the wood pieces into the dowel.

Point Nails

These are the point nails which will be use to hammer into the cam toy to make it stable.

Hammer

This is the hammer. It is use to hammer the nails in. The difference between the hammer and the mallet is the hammer is made of metal at the front and the mallet is made of wood which will not make the wood piece to break easily.
Final Product!

This is the final product, my cam toy. The cat at the back is unmovable and the cheese and the mouse is movable. It will move up and down when the handle is being rotate.

Process
Today I get a piece of white colour acrylic to make it into a shape of a mouse. I went to drill finish all the holes, the holes for the follower, handle, end. Below is the picture of the bench drilling machine which is use to drill. I use a 6.0 diameter drill bit to drill a tight fit hole.

Drilling Machine
I saw the dowel using the coping saw. The dowel I use 10cm to make the follower. Below is a picture of the coping saw.
Coping Saw
We clamp the dowel to the table using engineer's vice.
Engineer's Vice

I use abrafile to saw the middle of the dowel. I had to place my finger in the middle so that I will not saw at the side, which will cause the dowel to broke.

Abrafile

After sawing the middle of the dowel, I place the cheese in the middle of the hole which I saw. It will look like this.

Dowel with a cheese

Below is the cat which I saw last week using the scroll saw. I just added it in my design.

Mending of Hole

If a hole is too big for the follower that the follower will slide, we will have to mend up the hole. Above is the picture of the cam hole which had been filled with the wood filler. We cannot drill on the same area again . It is blench in colour so that people will not notice it from far.

Cat
This is a picture of a model which is made up of cardboard and wood. When the cam rotates, the cat will move its head forward. The side of the box is circular instead of the usual rectangular shape. It is much more better as there are no sharp adges.

Dinosaur
This is a model of a dinosaur cam toy. Two thin wires of different length are attached to the cam and the other end to the legs of the dinosaur. When the cam rotates, the wire will rotates and causes the legs of the dinosaur to move. It will appear as if the dinosaur is walking.

Flying Pig
This is a picture of a pig flying opperated by normal cams. When the handle is being turned, the cam will rotate causing the follower to move. The pig on the follower will move up and down. Thin wire attach to the wings and the follower will cause the wings to flip. It will looks like the pig is flying.
